Canon
100 IS Review
The Canon 100 IS is a strong camera in
Canon's Powershot range. It comes in two colors, black and silver.
Especially the black design gives this Canon digital camera a sleek
DSLR look. The display is rather small, but other than that it is a
pretty good compact digital camera.
A lot of people decide to buy digital cameras because they wish to
capture all kinds of beautiful landscapes
when they travel to places they do not go very often.
Although some technologies such as face detection
need not apply for landscape photography and most cameras having some
convenient "scene" mode settings for vivid shots,
what is exactly in the subject counts the most.
This is why people often get the ones with wide angel
zoom lenses, but if certain landscape shots are taken
too closely, the foreground objects tend to take more of the focus.
Camera Design
The Canon
100 IS being a high performing power shooter
only comes in two styles - black and silver and the black looks great
as it gives it a sleek DSLR-like look,
but appears much more compact.
Many of the design elements sport curves for a modern feel and even the
back of the camera has a layout similar to some DSLR
models where the buttons are found on the bottom of the
screen.
The main drawback is the rather small 2.5-inch LCD which is
understandable for a camera that was released late 2007.
Camera Features
Capable of taking 8-megapixel photos, the SX100 may not be the camera
for professionals at first sight, but the 10x optical zoom makes up for
it.
On the power side, the DIGIC III Image Processor
is built-in promising great image quality
and more vibrant colors.
Thanks to the Optical Image Stabilizer,
shots can be taken at the maximum 10x zoom while keeping the image
frame focused and steady. Shots from great distances can be taken with
this zoom.
Face Detection is also a plus
and contains some unique features of Canon
100 IS, including a dedicated Face Selector
button which lets users choose the primary face. Primary faces are
always locked on and tracked when in motion so the appropriate facial
enhancements are applied every time.
Low light situations do not affect the quality either when the ISO
1600 setting is used and the camera shake
doesn't affect the big picture.
Extra Features
When the "Auto" shooting mode produces lackluster
results, 17 other shooting modes can be
used along with 7 other special scene modes.
Some of the nice special modes include night scene photography,
foliage, snow, beach, fireworks, and more.
It also interacts well with Canon-branded printers as there is a port
where a USB cable can be connected
directly to the photo printer.
By
pressing the Print/Share button, photos
are printed on paper at their highest resolutions.
Various sizes can be chosen for different occasions ranging from
standard postcards to large borderless images.
Other SX PowerShot cameras take the spotlight
now with even more enhanced image processing, but the Canon 100 IS
still doesn't disappoint in zooming
features and portability and can now be purchased at more affordable
prices.
