Fujifilm
F100FD Review
Fujifilm provides an all-around solution with
the Fujifilm F100FD. It was introduced in 2008 and continues to be on
shelves
for its simple design and strong features.
The selection of digital cameras is so wide these days as dozens of
manufacturers compete heavily and all over numerous
models aiming at specific consumer groups.
While this helps these consumers greatly in finding the exact camera
for their preferences, it is always good to aim for all-around solutions
that can benefit everyone particularly photo enthusiasts that want the
basics, but at the same time wish they can keep their camera for a long
time.
Fujifilm provides an all-around solution with the Fujifilm
F100FD
. It was introduced more than a year ago and continues to be on shelves
for its simple design and good list of features.
Camera Design
The Fujifilm F100FD design is pretty basic and comes in silver and
black. Viewing the camera from the front shows its simplicity and
elegance with the "Slim Arc" style making
it much easier to handle.
The real uniqueness is noticed when viewing the camera from the back as
all of the controls are laid out to make it easy for one-hand
shooting although some may need to hold it with both
hands to access the lower controls.
The Wheel Dial is pretty innovative
having the controls of a directional pad
and can be turned to go through the options.
Camera Features
The CCD is 12 megapixels so any pictures
captured in max resolution boast high
detail with good color processing, exposure,
and sharpness.
It is a newbie-friendly camera thanks to all of the "Scene"
modes available including a unique mode called the "Portrait
Enhancer". The Night mode
also helps by prolonging the exposure to 8 seconds.
Even more performance can be squeezed out when the manual mode is set
where the white balance, ISO,
metering, and exposure can all
be customized.
Wide Dynamic Range is another
key element of the Fujifilm
F100FD and very useful for landscape photographers as it
preserves the natural sky, sea, and land colors along with balanced shadow
details and highlights. Face Detection sees its 3rd revision making it
now capable to detect faces faster in
motion at any angle even if they are upside down.
It does a fantastic job detecting up to 10 faces quickly and whatever
red eye is generated is removed right after the shutter
is pressed. After a successful shot is taken, each face can be seen as
a zoomed up portrait allowing them to be individually cropped
and conveniently played back in a slideshow.
The maximum sensitivity is ISO3200 at
full resolution, but for 3-megapixel photos, it becomes much higher at ISO12800
without the extra noise. Two technologies are used to eliminate blur
combining Image Stabilization to
compensate for camera shake with FinePix
high sensitivity to detect motion blur.
Extra Features
By buying a separately sold waterproof casing,
underwater photography is possible using the special "Underwater"
scene mode.
The Fujifilm F100FD has some of the best face detection
features and great landscape photography uses.
Although it doesn't boast too many extras for its high price,
it manages to be a swift performer that
any new or amateur photography would enjoy.
