Nighttime
Digital Photography
Nighttime digital
photography can create some of the most dramatic,
beautiful types of photography that you can do.
Have you ever come upon a
scene at night and thought, 'Wow, that would be a fantastic shot!' But
you had no clue how to get it?
Well, nighttime digital
photography does differ in many ways from
daytime photography or photography with adequate lighting.
However, when it comes down
to it, there are many things that are the same.
You just have to understand
how to make the necessary tweaks in order
to achieve the stunning nighttime digital photography that you are
interested in shooting.
These helpful tips will
have you shooting in the dark in no time!
Nighttime Digital Photography -- Get Ready
* Nighttime Digital Photography Get
Ready Tip #1: Know where you are going.
Try to travel there in the daytime at least once if you can. Keep in
mind that you will be traveling either to or from that location in the
dark, so you need to know where you will park, the route you will take
and other important information regarding the location. It is a good
idea if you can survey it beforehand.
* Nighttime Digital
Photography Get Ready Tip #2: Know about your environment.
You need to know when the sun is setting and
where as well as when and where the moon is rising. The weather
forecast is also important so that you can know if you need to dress
for warmer weather or if you need a jacket.
In the summer you may want to throw some insect
repellent into your bag. This is particularly true for
warmer weather or if you will be shooting near a body of water.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Get
Ready Tip #3: Bring water, a thermos of coffee, beef jerky and other
simple items that you can throw into your backpack. This
is especially necessary if you are shooting in a natural location,
particularly if it is remote.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Get
Ready Tip #4: Carry a small backpack with any personal
items that you may need. Bring your cell phone and a flash light. If
you are hiking to a remote location in the woods or mountains, you
should drop a small first aid kit in your pack. Another item that you
will find useful and very practical for many situations is a Swiss army
knife. It can prove invaluable not only for location shoots, day or
night, but for a variety of other situations as well.
Equipment that you Need for Nighttime Digital
Photography
Your camera bag is the next
thing to pack. If you are hiking to a remote location, you want to keep
it as light as possible, but don't forget the necessary items. This
checklist should help.
* Nighttime
Digital Photography Equipment #1: Tripod – Often in
night photography, you have longer exposure times. A tripod will help
keep your camera steady so that you have clear, good shots.
* Nighttime
Digital Photography Equipment #2: Remote Shutter Release
– This will help to keep your camera steady. Sometimes, even pushing
the shutter button that is on the camera body can cause it to shake
enough to affect the shot. If you can't use a remote shutter release,
try using the self timer if you can.
* Nighttime
Digital Photography Equipment #3: Bubble Level – This
will help keep your camera level, reducing editing later.
* Camera and Lenses – This
goes without saying, but you never know
Tips for Perfect Nighttime Digital
Photography
* Nighttime Digital Photography Tip
#1: Go Manual – If you can, turn your camera to manual.
The more control you have over your camera, the better your chances are
that you will get the great shots that you are after, so turn it off of
automatic.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Tip
#2: Know how your Camera's Light
Meter Performs – If you find that your night shots
aren't coming out the way you want with automatic metering, then switch
to manual.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Tip
#3: Adjust your ISO – The
higher the ISO on your camera, the faster shutter speed/exposure time
you can get away with.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Tip
#4: Don't use the Flash –
Most flashes that are on a camera body only light the area that is five
or six feet in front of it. With nighttime digital photography, using a
flash can cause an imbalance in exposure so that the foreground may be
overexposed while the subject is underexposed.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Tip
#5: Reduce the Noise –
Digital cameras have a tendency to have high noise levels when taking
long exposure shots. Check your camera and see if it has a feature for
reducing noise for long exposures.
* Nighttime Digital Photography Tip
#6: Use the Bracketing Feature
– If your digital camera has a feature that allows you to bracket your
shots then you should use it. This will be a tremendous help because it
allows you to shoot at one shutter speed, then automatically shoot half
a step up and half a step down in shutter speed.
Nighttime digital photography can be fun, exciting
and turn out some gorgeous shots. Make sure that you take lots of
shots, differing exposures and other factors. Have fun, be safe and get
that awesome shot!
