D60 Review
The Nikon
D60 is one of the smallest digital SLR cameras available today.
For its relatively small size its' packed with features. Without the
bigger price tag of the bigger
digital SLR cameras available it is a very attractive camera!
Modern digital cameras these days can do magic.
They instantly turn ordinary people like us
into photography enthusiasts because of the simplicity
and affordability of these digital cameras.
Photo quality may not be great for professionals to accept, but that is
where the bigger digital SLR cameras have a role to play.
The only problem is that these cameras sometimes involve a huge
learning
curve just to take good pictures and come with a heavy price tag. The
Nikon aims to change that by offering one of the smallest
digital SLR cameras in the lineup - the Nikon
D60 .
Nikon D60 Highlights
The Nikon D60 is basically a Nikon D40x that has
enough power for it to completely change its model name.
It manages to
squeeze in the EXPEED image processor which
utilizes a number of algorithms to achieve better image and color
quality based on the camera's processor power.
The EXPEED processor is a big deal for the Nikon
D60 because it has been previously implemented in high-end and flagship
models making the D60 the first affordable mid-range to have this
technology.
It also takes a feature from the D40 that didn't make it in the D40x
which is the continuous-mode burst length. This
allows up to 100 JPEG images or 6 RAW images to be taken without any
delays.
Were you experiencing some dust problems in both the D40 and D40x? Then
you will be happy to
know that a dust reduction system is present in the
D60. Sensor cleaning will still be needed occasionally, but the system
does contribute in better performance by shaking the low pass filter
without user intervention.
It incorporates a technology known as Airflow control
to prevent additional dust from reaching the center.
The Nikon
D60 boasts the
same 10.2 megapixel count which is already present
in several point-and-shoot models. However, this camera is still worth
getting as it includes a nice kit lens AF-S DX NIKKOR lens.
It is an improved version of the previous lens included in the D40x by
having vibration and enhanced optical quality while reducing the cost.
Other Notable Features of the Nikon D60
In addition to the EXPEED image processor, the Nikon D60 features Active
D-Lighting which automatically adjusts the contrast and
balances out the brightness to preserve detail after each image is
taken.
The 3D Color Matrix Metering II also plays a role
by analyzing the scene and compares it to a database of other scenes to
better determine which enhancements need to be applied. Taken photos
can be enhanced even further by using the "Retouch"
option. Once again, the D60 is the first entry-level model to have this
technology.
Stop-motion movies can also be created
by having the camera stitch a few photos together to form frames. The
options are basic allowing 3 sizes with 640x480 being the largest and four
frame rates from 3 fps to 15 fps.
The Nikon D60 has a lot of great
features that first time DSLR users will absolutely love. It would be
nice if it had a live view and it had an autofocus for the non AF-S
lenses, but overall performance makes the D60 worth the $700 price tag.
