The Olympus MJU 1040 is a sexy camera. It focuses
on slimness and fashion while still offering exceptional digital
photography features.
When the transition from film cameras to digital cameras became
mainstream, their looks didn't really change that much from the front
side with the lens slightly repositioned and the overall design a
little bit smaller.
While the different manufacturers have their own versions of digital
camera line ups coming in different colors
and styles, the overall layout of the
core features are quite similar.
The Olympus
MJU 1040 is one of the models that has a different approach
by focusing on slimness and fashion while still offering exceptional
photo shooting features.
Olympus MJU 1040 Camera Design
The front side of the Olympus MJU 1040 is minimalistic resembling a
mobile phone.
Sliding down the panel that
takes up most of the front reveals the lens on the upper right and a
summary of the specifications in the upper left. The flash
rests in between the two making full use of the space
above.
It comes in four colors with the typical black and silver metal designs
along with some flashy red and yellow designs making it one of the more
stylish cameras to use. On the backside rests a HyperCrystal
LCD display measuring 2.7" which takes up most of the
space.
Olympus MJU 1040 Camera Features
The Olympus
MJU 1040 has a small 3x optical zoom with a 38-144mm for
taking high-definition photos at a closer view while maintaining the sharpness.
It also uses a few technologies to make the image better and more vivid
automatically using the "Intelligent Auto Mode"
feature. This mode works by adjusting the focus and exposure based on
the five most commonly used scenes.
Like many of the other Olympus models, the MJU 1040 uses the TruePic
III image processor to handle the image quality much
better.
The face detection feature is a bit enhanced compared to other models
as it can detect up to 16 faces and do the appropriate adjustments for
each person. Seeing the results is impressive even in the HyperCrystal
LCD display as it appears nicely even in direct sunlight.
The 10 megapixel support makes it a decent camera for taking photos
that can be used in large poster prints, but 3 megapixel settings
unlock other features as well including the ability to take
high-speed sequential shooting at 14 fps for 12 frames
and the availability of the ISO3200
manual sensitivity setting. With the Digital Image Stabilization, blur
is reduced even in low light.
Olympus MJU 1040 Extra Features
It is also possible to create nice panoramas using the Olympus MJU
1040, but the only problem is that it only functions if the Olympus
xD-Picture Card is used.
Movies can also be recorded
with the device with max resolutions up to 640 x 480 at 30 fps. There
is also a Super Macro mode that can close
the distance to 7 cm.
The Olympus MJU 1040 is a very stylish unit that contains enough
features to rival some of the modern entry-level cameras out there. The
zoom function keeps the image
sharp, but some loss of detail is noticeable. What really makes this
worth the purchase is the low price at under $250 which is rather cheap
for a stylish.
