Samsung Digimax A50 Review

The Samsung Digimax A50 is a sleek, aesthetically designed compact digital camera which has been designed to look both stylish and modern. So what exactly does the Digimax A50 offer in terms of features & functionality? Read on.

The 5 megapixel resolution certainly performs well although not too uncommon anymore.

The A50 has a 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom which are a generally standard feature on good quality point and shoot cameras.

What distinguishes this camera from other similar models is the enormous 2.5" LCD screen which makes editing images a so much simpler task.

The editing functions in the camera include a slide show feature, resolution changes, a trimming function, and picture protection.

The Samsung Digimax A50 only comes with 11Mb of internal memory so an external memory card will be essential for any enthusiastic photographer.

However, you can use the Copy function to transfer images from the internal memory to external memory at any time without too much difficulty.

The control layout is pretty simple. The Photo Frame function lets you choose one of nine different borders with which to frame shots.

The A50 does have a reasonable selection of Scene modes to choose from including Night, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach & Snow) to help get the best and most appropriate exposure and levels for the conditions.

Additionally you can adjust the White Balance choosing from Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Tungsten, and Custom. Colors can be adjusted with the RGB function. The Color Effect function means images can come out in black and white, sepia, blue, red, green, or film color, a particularly fun feature!

Moving images on the Samsung Digimax A50 are recorded at 30 frames per second, which does give an impressively smooth playback.

There's a Pause function available when shooting a movie to enable stop and start during filming.

Some cameras now offer an anti-shake function for still images but the Samsung Digimax A50 has this available for movies.

This is an interesting feature that we haven't seen very often before. it certainly makes an impression on the final results.

The digital voice recorder function lets you record for up to one hour, or you can add 10 seconds of voice over to a previously shot and stored still image.

We were thoroughly impressed by the design and functionality & thought this a well balanced compact model. As far as 'point and shoot' models go, we'd certainly rate the Samsung Digiamx A50 in amongst our top 5 digital compacts!
