The
Samsung GX10 Review
Welcome
to the Samsung GX10 Review, The result of a joint Samsung &
Pentax venture, boasting 10.7 Megapixels and an extremely quick DDR2
processing unit!
The
Samsung GX10 offers a lot of camera for not a lot of money!
It's a shame that Samsung
have never really had the credit they deserve for some of the digital
camera products they have introduced to us over the years.
You may think the company
is a newcomer to the photo world, but actually the Korean giant has had
a photographic arm for quite some time.
As we mentioned, the Samsung
GX10 is a joint project with Pentax,
a company already marketing its own version of the same product, the
Pentax K10D!
It's important we recognize
that the two companies really have come together to produce these
models, and neither one could have done so without the other. Quite
what part each plays in the relationship we can only guess, but the
obvious answer would be that Pentax supplies the photographic aspects
of the deal while Samsung supplies the electronics.
Either way, the sum of the
two parts is most certainly greater than what either manufacturer could
have managed independently. The Pentax K10D
is, after all, a very different product from the Pentax 1st models, and
perhaps Samsung is the new factor that has allowed Pentax to step up
several gears in one very large leap, a successful partnership indeed!
The camera has a Raw
mode, which allows Raw-only capture as well as
simultaneous Raw and JPEG
shooting.
The Raw mode also saves an
Adobe DNG type file.
This is where the GX10
and K10D become very different.
The GX10 model also uses a DDR2
double speed processing unit, which to us 'non techies' simply means it
passes data from the camera to the memory card very quickly
indeed!
We particularly liked the
square panel buttons Samsung has chosen to adopt for the GX10 model.
The new GX10 uses a Pentax 'K
mount' which means there's a ready supply of lenses
available for this model. The GX10 has an
APS 'C' sized CCD sensor and boasts 10.7
Mega Pixels. Other settings allow image sizes of 6MP and 2MP while JPEG
images can be compressed across three ratios - Super Fine, Fine or
Normal.
The Samsung GX10 is a great
performer, producing images that are really well suited to manipulation
in software.
In general the GX10 is a
very comfortable camera to use,
the grip is excellent and the body shape and size proves very easy to
handle for most users.
All of which leads to a
very enjoyable shooting
experience for GX10 owners!
